Karate-Do
Karate is a martial art from Japan and developed firstly by Gichin Funakoshi. Karate-Do means: empty hand way and is a striking art that uses kicking, punching, elbow strikes, knee strikes and knife-hands techniques. A person that practices Karate is called Karateka.
Karate could be practiced as an art, as a sport or as a self-defense tactic. Karate training is commonly divided in Kihon, Kata and Kumite. Kihon is a technique of combination of techniques that a Karateka or group of Karatekas use to practice to perform.
Kata literally means "shape" and is a sequence of offensive and defensive postures to create an unreal fight with unreal opponents. Kumite means "meeting of hands" and it´s the sparring part of Karate with real opponents.
Karate has different styles that use different techniques and postures. Karate styles are: Shotokan, Goju Ryu, Shito Ryu, Wado Ryu, Kyokushinkai, Motobu Ryu and Shotokai. The Karate-Do practices the character, the truth, the effort, the courtesy and no violent behavior.
